“We can’t be afraid of change. You may feel very secure in the pond that you are in, but if you never venture out of it, you will never know that there is such a thing as an ocean, a sea. Holding onto something that is good for you now, maybe the very reason why you don’t have something better.” This is one of the many famous quotes by C. JoyBell C. If you ask anyone you consider successful how it is that they became successful, the answer is almost always that they tried something new and left their comfort zone. For most of us, this is often what is holding us back from self-actualization. We get to a place in our lives where we feel comfortable whether it be with the job that we have or the level of education we possess and once we are comfortable, we usually become satisfied and stop seeking more. If you are happy with staying there, then that’s fine, but for those who want more or are always wondering what it would be like doing something different, I encourage you to pursue those thoughts and see where they can lead you.
Most people don’t realize their strengths or even their weaknesses until they try out something new. For example, how would you know you had an artistic talent If you had never attempted to draw? But say you did discover your talent for creating amazing art pieces, this could open doors to the world of art that you would never have thought possible before. If men and women did not have the courage or motivation to explore things unknown to them, then we would not have many of the great things we very much enjoy today. Things like automobiles, boats, airplanes, and all the high technology we have today. All of this just goes to show that the reason humanity has evolved to where we are today is that people wanted and were willing to explore the unknown.
The same principle applies if you truly want to excel at something you need to be willing to go further than most people have gone, in other words, you will need to explore what is unknown. The greatest musicians of all time excelled because they tried something that was unknown to most people at the time this is the same thing the brightest minds of every generation had to do. For most of us today we are afraid to try out new things because of the fear of failure. It is okay to be scared of failing but what is not okay is the failure to do anything because you are afraid that you will fail. The fear of failure if well controlled can motivate you to do better than you otherwise would have but if not managed this fear can and most of the time is the reason we never accomplish much in our lives.
Now you might be thinking how do I go about exploring the unknown? The simple answer is you need to learn what you don’t know. You will never acquire knowledge that you don’t have by watching the same things you always watch, reading the same types of books you have been reading, or even by taking the same of classes you take. On the contrary, you must put aside what you know and seek knowledge that you do not possess. It can be as simple as going to the library and looking for books about topics you’ve never thought about reading or going online and finding all the information you can on something you would like to try out; this is how most entrepreneurs usually start. The constant desire to learn something new is what has led and continues to lead many to success.
